She's spent months trying to avoid being snookered by EU leaders over Brexit and now Theresa May has had to have an awkward game of pool with Italy's prime minister.

Giuseppe Conte invited an uneasy-looking Mrs May to join a game during the EU-Arab League summit in Egypt.

Handed a pool cue, the UK Prime Minister complained: “I’ll be hopeless,” before adding: “You’ll have to show me how.”

As Mr Conte chalked her cue, an aide stepped in to offer some last-ditch advice before Mrs May took her shot, telling her: “You put your hand as close as you can to the white…”

After getting herself in position, Mrs May took her shot. Cruelly, however, Mr Conte’s video, posted on his Twitter account, cut off just as she hit the cue ball so it is unknown if the Prime Minister's aim was true.

It was a diversion during a summit a which Mrs May signalled that she wants to remain in power and push ahead with her domestic agenda once the UK has left the EU.

The Prime Minister insisted her job was not only about delivering Brexit on the scheduled date of March 29, but also dealing with issues like the NHS.

Mrs May stressed that once the UK had formally withdrawn from the EU, a new future partnership deal with the bloc needed to be hammered out.
