Moment specialist team rescue cow called Margaret trapped in Scots river and reunite her with farmer

This is the moment a cow named Margaret was rescued by specialists after being trapped in a Scots river.

The massive black and white animal had escaped from her field before tumbling down an embankment and into the River Lochar near Dumfries.

A rescue operation was mounted to free the trapped cow from the water, by a special hoist used to get her out safely.

Pictures from the scene show worried farmers watching on as team members from the Nith Inshore Rescue helped to move her.

She is now happily back with her fellow cows in their field.

A Facebook post from the group told of the bovine drama.

It read: "We assisted a local farmer with helping to get one of his cows (Margaret apparently) out of the Lochar river.

"Bankside safety systems set up and we guided the cow out of the river safely."

John Jamieson, a man claiming to be Margaret's owner, said she is 'none the worse' after the aquatic ordeal.

Many thanks to everyone this afternoon who helped to rescue our heifer that fell in the river.

"The Nith Inshore team were great in a difficult and dangerous stretch of water, also thanks to Alistair and Austin Wyllie for their help from the other bank.

"The heifer is none the worse of her two hours in the water, with fence repaired she is now safely back in her field."
