Moment shopkeeper pinned thief to wall in desperate attempt to stop him fleeing - before his mates turn up

This is the moment a shopkeeper tried to stop a 'brazen' thief from walking out of his shop with a basket full of stolen goods.

CCTV footage shows Dharmendra Patel challenging the shoplifter as he tries to flee Shawclough Stores in Rochdale.

Moments earlier the man had walked over to the fridge and filled a shopping basket with around £70 of meat and cheese.

He then tries to walk out straight out of the store but Mr Patel, who became suspicious after watching him on CCTV, shuts the door and pins him against the wall.

But then two other men can be seen forcing the door open to allow the thief to escape.

Mr Patel, 55, who this week celebrated 30 years since he first opened the shop on Shawclough Road, said: "It was broad daylight. It was absolutely brazen.

"I tried to stop him, but it was three against one. It's costing me a lot of money. I'm going to spend nearly a grand putting new security measures in.

"We work hard to make a living and help the community, but how do we do that if this keeps happening? It's crazy.

"They're just scum. I worry that someone, either a customer or a shop worker, is going to get hurt if this carries on."

Mr Patel says the the incident, which took place at about 6pm on Sunday, was the third time in just over a fortnight his shop has been targeted in a similar way.

He said: "I know their names. They're well-known to police. They're not locals, they come from Lancashire and target shops here, in the town centre and in Whitworth.

"I know the police are under-resourced, but something needs to be done about them."

Greater Manchester Police confirmed the incidents were being investigated.
