Deputy Joe Bertoni and his partner Dan Staley found themselves on a 'rescue mission' after responding to a noise complaint at 3am.

Bertoni recognised T-Shirt by its big white spot across the chest and said: "That is T-Shirt. It's OK."

When T-Shirt retreated back into the dumpster, they moved into action, using tree branches to loosen the latch and lift up one side of the metal lid.

Sheriff's Sgt Dave Hunt told the Los Angeles Times : "He's not a friendly bear by any means. I think he was just tired."

He also reviewed the video and said it looks like T-Shirt has gained weight, given that hibernation season is approaching.

"They're fattening up. how he got in is beyond me. If he was a little bit skinnier, he could have gotten out. He's a pretty big, good boy."
