Moment of silence held across Dublin as Detective Garda Colm Horkan laid to rest in Co Mayo

A moment of silence was held across Dublin today as Detective Garda Colm Horkan was laid to rest in Co Mayo.

Detective Horkan was shot dead in the line of duty in Castlerea, Co Roscommon on Wednesday night.

Among those paying tribute were his colleagues in An Garda Siochana, members of Dublin Fire Brigade and other emergency services in Ireland.

Sharing images from across the capital, DFB said: "Our firefighter/paramedics across the city joining their colleagues in An Garda Siochana in a minutes silence for Detective Garda Colm Horkan."

While the garda social media channels went silent during the funeral service.

President Michael D Higgins also sounded the peace bell at Aras an Uachtarain to signal the beginning and end of the minute silence in memory of Det Horkan.

Posting after the funeral, An Garda Siochana said: "We would like to thank President Michael D. Higgins for sounding the Peace Bell at Áras an Uachtaráin today to signal the start and end of a minutes silence for the funeral of Detective Garda Colm Horkan."

Hundreds of people lined the streets to bid the brave officer a final farewell earlier today.

A guard of honour was formed by gardai as the detective's remains were carried to St James' Church.

A tricolour was draped on his coffin and his garda hat rested on top.

Some mourners wore black armbands as a mark of respect.

Garda Commissioner Drew Harris and Minister for Justice Charlie Flanagan were among the attendees.

A number of gifts were brought to the altar in memory of the late detective.

His garda notebook to symbolise his service in the force, the keys to his beloved Audi car and a CD to represent his love of music were presented.

Chief celebrant Monsignor Tommy Johnston, Parish Priest of Charlestown remembered Detective Garda Colm Horkan as one of “nature’s gentlemen.”

He said: “That gentleness and respect earned the goodwill of so many and endeared him to young and old."

This weekend, a man was arrested after causing criminal damage to a book of condolence for Detective Garda Colm Horkan in Blanchardstown garda station where he had previously served.

A garda spokeswoman said: "Gardaí in Blanchardstown have arrested and charged a man (23 years) in relation to an incident of criminal damage that occurred at Blanchardstown Garda Station on Friday afternoon, 19th June, 2020.

"The man was in Blanchardstown Garda Station and proceeded to cause criminal damage to the Book of Condolences for the late Detective Garda Colm Horkan.

"The man was arrested this morning, Sunday 21st June, 2020. He has since been charged and is due to appear before Blanchardstown District Court on Monday morning, 22nd June, 2020 at 10.30a.m."
