Moment Leeds street turns into 'apocalyptic warzone' as notorious gang of yobs spread chaos

A gang of unruly yobs branded the ‘Peaky Minors' set off fireworks in a Leeds street on Bonfire night and left it looking like a warzone, a student has claimed.

The shocking scenes captured on November 5 show the student area in Burley lit up by fiery flashes and explosions.

A student, who did not want to be named, said he came out of his house in the early hours to find a big orange glow and thought he had walked into an apocalypse.

He said students in the area call the youths 'Peaky Minors' because of the trouble they cause.

The astrophysics student at the University of Leeds said: “It was apocalyptic.

“I came out of my house and there was a big orange glow on the side of the house and the air was smoky.

“So I went over and just saw the middle of the road ablaze. It was like a world war in 2021.”

A student claims she was struck by a firework during the chaos which left her with minor burns and a ruptured eardrum.

West Yorkshire Police said most of the region enjoyed a ‘safe and largely peaceful bonfire night’.

But a number of ‘more serious incidents’ were being investigated.

Assistant Chief Constable Catherine Hankinson said: “Bonfire night is one of our busiest nights of the year and 2021 has been no exception with a number of calls for service across West Yorkshire.

“I am pleased to say that the majority of the evening was peaceful with residents attending organised events in the right spirit and enjoying displays.

“We did attend at a small number of serious incidents and one of these involved an injury to a police officer.

“A number of arrests were made and police will carry out a full investigation into what took place. We will also be carrying out further enquiries into an attack on firefighters in Shipley.

“We have made clear that disorder of this kind, and of the attack on a house in Leeds will not be tolerated and every effort will be made to identify those involved using CCTV and bodycam footage.

“These and other isolated acts were not representative of the wider picture across much of West Yorkshire however which has largely been peaceful.”
