Moment Leeds legend Rob Burrow is given his Covid-19 vaccine

Leeds legend Rob Burrow has received his covid vaccine - and is urging others to do the same as soon as they get the call.

The rugby league icon has turned his Motor Neurone Disease diagnosis into a charity crusade to help other sufferers.

Motor Neurone Disease (MND) is a degenerative condition that affects how the nerves in the brain and spinal cord function.

Former Leeds Rhinos star and dad-of-three Rob, 38, told 12 months ago how he had been diagnosed with the illness – and medics said he had one to two years to live.

Because of Rob's diagnosis, he had been classed as clinically vulnerable and had been able to receive his first jab of the coronavirus vaccine.

It was first time he was able to leave his home for months, while shielding.

Speaking to the BBC after receiving his jab, Rob said: "I am so pleased to have had my Covid vaccine. I have Motor neurone disease and there is no cure. I don’t want to be fighting Covid as well.

“The team was so lovely and they are doing their very best to protect us all .

“I would encourage everyone that when you get the call to go and get the vaccine. Make sure you do as we need to protect the NHS and save as many lives as possible.”

Just a few weeks ago, Burrow was awarded an MBE.

Burrow's MBE is in recognition of his services to his sport but also respects how he has raised awareness of MND during the coronavirus pandemic.

And whilst he had spoken on his pride after being awarded the major honour, he had said that he hopes his MBE in the New Year Honours list will give comfort to fellow motor neurone disease sufferers and reassure them that their plight will not be ignored.

He said: "It is truly humbling to be awarded an MBE and I would like to thank everyone who has made this possible."
