Moment knifeman at Manchester railway station was pinned down by members of the public

Heroic train passengers and members of the public pinned down a man with a knife at Manchester Oxford Road station.

British Transport Police were scrambled to the scene at around 7.15pm on Friday (October 25).

A man with a knife was 'quickly' arrested by officers on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon.

Eyewitnesses at the scene say the man was 'held down' by members of the public and passengers as he was taken off the train.

Nobody was hurt during the incident.

BTP also said there 'nothing to suggest' that the incident was terror-related.

A spokeswoman from British Transport Police said: “At 7.19pm today (25 October) officers from British Transport Police and Greater Manchester Police were called to Manchester Oxford Road station after reports of a man in possession of a knife.

“Police officers were quickly on scene and detained a man. The man was arrested on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon, he is being taken to custody.

“There are no reported injuries and there is nothing to suggest this incident is terror related at this time.”

One eyewitness said people at the scene were 'shaken and shocked' when the incident unfolded.

She said around '10 or more police officers' attended at the station .

They handcuffed the male and 'strapped his ankles together', she added.

Scores of people have now taken to social media to commend the members of the public and British Transport Police for their reaction to the situation.

One user said: "Well done those who stopped him. Sad it’s becoming a regular occurrence in our city. The worlds gone mad."

Another added: "Big thanks to the Transport Police for keeping is safe and acting so quickly to arrest the man."
