Moment Keith Urban changes Nicole Kidman-inspired lyrics to shout out new female band member amid split

Keith Urban has sparked fresh speculation over his split from Nicole Kidman after changing the lyrics of a love song once thought to be inspired by their romance.

The country singer, 57, altered a line from his 2016 track The Fighter during a live performance, swapping in the name of his guitarist, Maggie Baugh, 25.

The pair have dominated headlines since news of their separation emerged this week, with Kidman, 58, filing for divorce on Tuesday to end their 19-year marriage.

Sources close to the actress claim she “feels very betrayed” and believe Urban has already moved on with a “younger woman in the music industry.”

Footage from the recent show was shared on Instagram by Baugh, who posted a clip of Urban singing: “When they’re tryna get to you, Maggie I’ll be your guitar player.”

The lyric originally goes: “When they’re tryna get to you, baby I’ll be the fighter.”

The song, which originally featured Carrie Underwood, was written about the uncertainty of new relationships.

In light of Urban’s marriage breakdown, fans immediately seized on the altered line.

It is not known how Baugh originally captioned the clip, but after Urban's split from Kidman came to light she edited the wording, which now read: “Did he just say that” alongside mind-blown emojis.

Comments under the post reflected the backlash.

“OK, dumping Nicole is looking more suspect,” one fan wrote, while another added: “Wow, that song was made for Nicole. For him to do that that tells us what he’s really all about.”

A third labelled the change “the ultimate ick,” writing: “It is so trashy to do this to a song inspired by his wife. It’s the ultimate ick”.

Urban and Kidman, who wed in 2006 and share two daughters, were last seen together in June before reports surfaced that they had been living apart for months.

On Tuesday, People reported that Kidman “feels very betrayed” by Urban as she filed for divorce in Nashville, a day after news of their separation first emerged.

In the wake of the filing, it has been reported that Kidman has been left “devastated” by the split.

A source telling People: “Nicole's hurt and feels betrayed. It's devastating to her. She's shocked.”

On Monday both TMZ reported that Kidman “didn’t want” to split and the Oscar winner “has been fighting to save the marriage.”

The couple were last photographed together in June when they attended the FIFA Club World Cup in Nashville, following a red-carpet appearance at the Academy of Country Music Awards the previous month.

While their split came as a shock to many, reports suggested signs of strain surfaced months earlier.

Kidman and the country music star, who share two daughters Sunday Rose, 17, and Faith Margaret, 14, had sparked speculation when only she marked their wedding anniversary publicly this year.

Kidman and Urban each launched their respective careers in Australia and hold dual US and Australian citizenship. They met in January 2005 at a Hollywood event promoting Australia, and married in June the following year in Sydney.

The actress earlier this month wrapped production on a sequel to the film Practical Magic with Sandra Bullock.

Meanwhile Urban has been on his High and Alive World tour since May in support of his 11th studio album, High.

The singer has shows scheduled through mid-October and the next stop scheduled for Thursday, in Hershey, Pennsylvania.
