Moment hundreds of neighbours take part in 'socially distanced' group performance of Saturday Night dance routine

Hundreds of neighbours came together to perform a socially distanced dance to Whigfield's iconic hit Saturday Night in an effort to spread cheer during the coronavirus lockdown.

Residents in Ringsend, Dublin, came together on Saturday to perform the 90s dance routine, which has enjoyed a comeback in Ireland thanks to its memorable appearance on an episode of sitcom Derry Girls.

Descending on balconies, courtyards and car parks, neighbours ensured they kept a two-metre distance from each other as they danced.

Each person's spot in the bunting-filled estate also appears to be chalked out, to ensure appropriate distance is kept.

The moment was captured on video and posted to social media, showed hundreds of residents shaking their hips and jumping back and forth during the classic routine.

Social media users were quick to praise the efforts of the neighbourhood.

“These people are one community and have probably not left the compound of these flats in weeks and yet they are still making an attempt to socially distance,” one said.

“Great community spirit.”

Go onnnn the Whigfield next time you could come sing it for us to dance to 😊 UP THE CANOS

One Twitter user said: "This is so uplifting and gave me a smile, thanks for sharing."

"Anyone moaning at this has to be one miserable human being. This is class," another said.

People up and down the country have been doing their bit to try and cheer up their neighbours.

In London, an opera singer took to her balcony to sing classical renditions of Amazing Grace and You Raise Me Up.

Singer Phoebe Haines said she hoped the performances would “brighten” her neighbours’ days as they are encouraged to stay at home.

“I had such a lovely warm response from the neighbours and I felt so happy to be able to add a bit of music to their day," she said.

“Since the lockdown, I hope I can continue to use music in a way which brightens people’s days and gives back to my local community.”
