Moment gran walks into wrong house mistaking it for her B&B before she is murdered

Haunting footage shows the moment a grandmother walked into a house in a B&B mix-up in which the violent homeowner unforgivably beat her to death.

Victim Margaret Barnes was viciously attacked by David Redfern after her discovered her in his home in Barmouth, North Wales, in July last year, leaving her with injuries likened to those caused by a high speed car crash.

The 71-year-old had mistaken the seaside home for a hotel she was staying in further down the street when Redfern discovered her in bed and drinking a glass of gin with her false teeth on the side table.

Evil Redfern, 46, was jailed for life on Friday for the crime, in which a court heard he dragged seven-and-a-half stone Mrs Barnes downstairs by her ankles while calling her a "scumbag" and a "thieving c***".

Outside, Redfern kicked and beat Mrs Barnes before mocking her as she lay defenceless on the ground.

Footage now released shows grandmother Mrs Barnes entering the five-bedroom home, pulling her suitcase behind her, as she believed she was checking in to the Wavecrest B&B situated a few houses down the street.

Redfern denied kicking or stamping on 5ft 5in Mrs Barnes as her turfed her out, but she had used her last breath to mouth the word "lying" and a jury at Caernarfon Crown court earlier convicted him of murder.

As Redfern was jailed for a minimum of 14 years on Friday, an emotional victim impact statement made by Mrs Barnes' daughter Natalie read: "As a family we will never get over what has happened. My mum didn't need to die and we don't understand why she had to."

Granddaughter Robyn Barnes meanwhile told the court how Redfern's crime left her "completely heartbroken" and with an empty seat at the family table.

Mrs Barnes was described as "a much-loved wife, mother and grandmother", with her death leaving behind her husband of 56 years.

Jailing Redfern, judge Mr Justice Bourne said: "You were astonished to find her in their bed, your first reaction was entirely appropriate but after that things went terribly wrong.

"You dragged her by the ankles downstairs and flung her wheeled-suitcase after her, your partner acted gently and carefully with this lady who was unsteady on her feet.

"Your partner behaved appropriately and compassionate care was given by her by and neighbours.

"You refused to call an ambulance. You did bring her water and asked to take her pulse."

Judge Mr Justice Bourne sentenced him to life, with a minimum of 14 years.
