Moment Gerry Cinnamon turns Liverpool arena into biggest party on the planet

Down-to-earth Glaswegian Gerry Cinnamon turned part of Liverpool into possibly the biggest party on the planet tonight.

The guitarist's brutally honest lyrics continue to strike a chord with Scousers as he gave a Merseyside debut to new single Sun Queen at the M&S Bank Arena.

In the lyrics he states: "Never thought I'd make it this far."

But thousands of his rowdy supporters who travelled hundreds of miles across the country to see him disagree.

They flocked here despite heavy rain and floods on Thursday causing a transport nightmare.

The Coral warmed up crowds in their hometown with renditions of hits in The Morning, Pass it On and Dreaming of You.

Then Gerry himself skipped on to Lullaby as canons fired ticker tape and smoke into the audience.

By now the arena was awash with towers of red and blue pyro, umbrellas and flags from Wales to Scotland.

Trainers were getting lashed in the air as the ecstatic sellout crowd bounced around as if a last minute winner has just been scored in a football match.

He said: "Thank you all for coming, you all up for a good night tonight? Silly question innit."

Gerry spoke a lot between songs but to be honest and I don't think anyone in the audience could understand a word.

But nobody cared, they were here for his indie swagger, thumping guitar beats and lyrics that can unite an entire room of 11,000 strangers.

Hits such as Belter, Sometimes and Canter lifted the somewhat soggy standing area off their feet.

His lyrics echoed around the arena sung by his adoring fans based everywhere from Glasgow to Garston.

It's difficult to put into words what makes Gerry a huge hit in working class cities.

It could be his inimitable style, refreshing lyrics and final product free from autotune.

Or maybe it's the Adidas jacket, retro trainers and flatcap combo he effortlessly pairs with just a humble guitar and microphone.

Gerry made his name after powering through Scotland's pubs and bars scene with a series of intimate gigs in 2014.

In the past five years his performance has taken him from T in the Park to Benicassim, Isle of Wight, Kendal Calling, Y Not and even Glastonbury festival.

In December 2018 Gerry raised the roof on the arena when he supported and possibly outshone the Courteeners.

He returned again in March to play at the Guild of Students.

To see him visit the city three times in 12 months shows he knows how loved he is on Merseyside.

This gig was a belter.

Same again next year please.
