Moment driver reversed into police car and 'played Russian roulette with people's lives'

Video footage shows the moment a driver reversed into a police car, playing "Russian roulette with everyone's life."

The body cam video shows Paul Smith reversing into a police car, disabling the vehicle and causing two police officers to sustain whiplash.

Bristol Crown Court heard on Wednesday (January 22) that Smith bought his first Fiat car after splitting from his partner and needing somewhere to live.

He had never held a driving licence before and panicked when police tried to pull him over. He led officers on a 20-minute pursuit in which he overtook traffic on blind bends and sped through 30mph zones travelling at 60mph.

After reversing into the police car, Smith then drove the wrong way around a roundabout before smashing into a farmer's gate.

Smith, 31, of Wootton Road in St Annes, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving without a driving licence and insurance on September 10 last year.

Judge Mark Horton jailed him for year.

He told Smith: "You were putting members of the public at risk.

"You were putting police officers at risk.

"Their sole role was to stop you doing something far more serious to other people.

"You've got a passenger in your car who said how frightened he was.

"You were basically playing Russian roulette with everyone's life."

Starting from his release, Smith was ordered to pay a £149 victim surcharge and was banned from driving for 15 months.

Rupert Russell, prosecuting, said police in Bishport Avenue spotted Smith's car had a broken light and a check revealed he was not insured.

When they indicated for him to stop he accelerated off, overtaking on a blind bend and hurtling through a 30mph speed limit at 50mph.

The court heard he overtook three vehicles on a blind bend before driving through a coned off area, with workmen, at 60mph.

After doing a U-turn in a petrol station, Smith stopped and "reverse rammed" police before driving off and crashing.

Though he fled on foot, he was arrested from a cornfield, having been tracked by a police helicopter.

Smith conceded to probation officer he had split from his girlfriend at the time and had consumed a cocktail of cocaine, amphetamine and anti-depression medication.

Caighli Taylor, defending, said her client had remained clean of drugs since arrest and had shown concern for the risk he had posed to others.
