Moment doomed yacht towed to safety by Ayrshire lifeboat crew as couple rescued

This is the moment a couple were saved from their yacht off the Ayrshire coast to prevent it crashing against a pier.

Girvan RNLI used a tow to drag the boat back to safety after it got into difficulty near to Girvan pier in a dramatic rescue mission.

The married couple on a grounded yacht were both hauled off the doomed boat as it took a battering and careered towards the wall of the pier on Monday evening.

The couple were separated for hours as the woman was first pulled off the boat followed by her husband who had to wait as the yacht was towed from shallow waters to allow the tide to rise.

Emergency crews were called out to attend the scene around 9.27pm after several 999 calls were frantically made by the couple.

As the yacht was rocked by the currents, lifeboat crew were able to rescue a woman by hauling her up using a ladder onto the pier.

With the woman's husband still on board, the lifeboat crew set up a tow line as the yacht found itself in 'imminent' danger.

The yacht sustained some damage and loss of power as it was towed with crews working to prevent loss of life, injury and prevent further damage.

The lifeboat pulled the yacht free and clear of the danger of the pier end.

But crews had to tow the yacht away from the pier due to low tide and waited hours for its safe return.

A spokesperson for Girvan RNLI has told how the man was 'exhausted' after the ordeal before he was eventually reunited with his wife.

They added: "If you believe someone to be in danger at sea or on the coast, please don't hesitate and dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard right away."
