Moment Brit is gunned down outside 5-star Argentina hotel in 'robbery gone wrong'

Horrifying footage shows the moment two British tourists were shot during a botched robbery in Argentina - leaving one dead and the other seriously injured.

Matthew Gibbard, 50, was shot a point-blank range as he tussled with two gun-toting masked men outside the five-star hotel in an upscale district in Buenos Aires at 11am yesterday.

His stepson Stefan Zone, 28, was also shot but survived with serious injuries.

Footage of the robbery shows two of the criminals pulling up on a motorbike as the Brits got out of their taxi.

The attackers try to rob them of their possessions and money, but are met with fierce resistance by the two men.

Cameras capture the thugs trying to rip the bags from their victims' hands before shots are fired.

After a tussle, Mr Zone is seen writhing in agony holding his left leg after being the first to be hit.

The shot just missed his femoral artery and is reportedly in a serious condition.

The sound of the shot led Mr Gibbard to grapple with the men before he is violently pushed to the road and shot.

He was hit through his armpit and into his chest leading him to have a cardiac arrest.

The perpetrators escaped after the attack and police were still searching for them.

Authorities say that the men may have been spotted and targeted as soon as they landed at the Ezeiza International Airport that morning, according to Perfil newspaper .

A witness told Canal America 24 that there was a commotion outside the hotel and he saw a person covered in blood on the ground as they were given medical treatment.

The witness, named only as Florencia, added: “When I reached the corner of the hotel I saw that there was a person lying at the front door and they were being attended to.

"A motorcycle passed, wanted to steal and shot them.

"After 15 minutes, paramedics came to assist them. It was very serious what happened. The delinquents escaped. It is supposed to be a safe area and is monitored by the Prefecture."

A Foreign Office spokeswoman said: "We are supporting the family of two British men following an incident in Buenos Aires, and are in contact with the local authorities there.

The shooting happened in Puerto Madero, a revitalised dockside area which lures tourists with its Costanera Sur Ecological Reserve and upscale hotels and restaurants.

It believed the men were checking into a £350-a-night Faena Art Hotel, which has been named one of the best hotels in Argentina.

A spokesman for the Faena Art Hote said: "We express our deepest condolences to the families and friends of the victims."

Police have said tourists being followed from the airport is an increasing problem with many foreign visitors, who arrive late in the year for the winter sun, being targeted.

Last December, Swedish tourist Christoffer Persson was shot during an attempted robbery, and his leg subsequently amputated due to his injuries.

Days later, a US tourist was hospitalised after a violent assault during which his camera was stolen.

Puerto Madero, where the murder took place, is the redeveloped former city docks, hailed as one of the most successful urban regeneration projects in the world, attracting huge foreign investment, young professionals, and luxury tourism.

More than 111,000 British nationals visited Argentina in 2018, according to the Foreign Office, which said most visits are "trouble-free".
