Family on UK seaside holiday spot huge shark just yards from the shore

This is the incredible moment a family spot a "basking shark" just metres from the shoreline.

Kerry Hester, 47, is currently on holiday with her two daughters, aged 13 and seven, at Caister-on-Sea in Norfolk and spotted the predator yesterday evening.

The mum-of-two said they went to walk their dogs on the beach and immediately spotted the shark swimming about close to the shore.

Kerry, from Harlow, Essex, told the Mirror: "We looked out to sea and we spotted the shark. It was really weird as there was hardly anyone down there and no one else seemed to notice it.

"I was really mesmerised by it. I think it was a basking shark and I don't think they're that common around here.

"It was about 100metres from the shore and it was visible with the naked eye."

Kerry filmed the incredible scenes of massive fin breaking the water and swimming along the coast at sunset with a wind farm in the background.

In one shot, she pans from the beach to the water to show how close the shark is swimming to the shore.

The mum said she was hypnotised watching the beast for about 20 minutes with her daughters.

Kerry said she has been travelling to Caister-on-Sea for holidays 30 years and has never seen a shark there before.

She said: "I was just sat there for about 20 minutes watching them, it was amazing to see.

"They were amazed and so excited to see it. They can't wait to tell everyone about it when they get back.

"I always come here on holiday and I've never seen a shark. I've been coming here for the past 30 years."

It is unclear what type of shark it was, but basking sharks are the second-largest species of fish, after whale sharks.

They can grow to an average of 20-26ft and weigh five tons.

Basking sharks are among the most commonly seen sharks in the UK and that is partly because of their size and because they often go close to shore, almost to the surf line.

They are not a danger to humans and swim very slowly following plankton on sea currents.

They migrate to the UK every summer and are found along the British Isles from the English Channel to the far north of Scotland.

Kerry's sighting comes after a beach in Dorset was evacuated because of a shark.

Bathers were told to get out of the water following the possible sighting off Boscombe beach, in Bournemouth, Dorset, on Wednesday as the area was evacuated.

The beach, which was busy with families enjoying their summer holidays, remained closed for almost an hour.

Lifeguards searched the sea on jet-skis looking for the ominous sign of a dorsal fin protruding from the water.

It is not known what species of shark was reported to have been spotted in the shallow water but it wasn't seen again.
