Starting this weekend, New Yorkers can visit MoMA PS1 free of charge, the Museum of Modern Art announced on Wednesday.
MoMA PS1, an exhibition space located in Long Island City, will offer free admission beginning Sunday 11 October to residents of New York’s five boroughs thanks to a grant from the Anna-Maria and Stephen Kellen Foundation.
The grant, awarded to MoMA PS1 to help in its outreach efforts, allows the museum to offer free entrance for the duration of a year, through 15 October 2016.
Through the grant, the museum is “able to provide open access to its exhibitions for the New York community, helping the museum to welcome all New Yorkers without regard for anyone’s ability to pay”, according to a statement from MoMA PS1.
“MoMA PS1 sees itself as a citizen of all five boroughs with a proud base in Queens,” Klaus Biesenbach, MoMA PS1 director, said in a statement.
Currently, visitors pay a suggested donation of either $10 (adults) or $5 (students and seniors). Children under 16 are admitted for free.
City residents looking to visit the exhibitions at MoMA PS1 must present proof of residency such as a driver’s license, state-issued identification or a utility bill.
