A gender reveal party went viral for all the wrong reasons when a mom decided to make her daughter’s big day all about herself. Gianna D’Alessio, 23, and her husband Gregorio, 46, were having their first baby and wanted a simple gender reveal at home. But D’Alessio’s mother, Angel Wulff, 52, had other plans.
The TikTok video shows the couple standing in their backyard with confetti cannons. When they set them off, they looked totally confused. Blue confetti came out of his cannon and pink came out of hers. Everyone watching had no idea what was going on. Then Wulff showed up in the video, standing on a rock above everyone else with a big black balloon. She popped it and pink confetti came out, showing the baby was a girl.
The video got millions of views and people were not happy. When Wulff tried to defend what she did, she said it was actually her party anyway because she was the one who threw it. She also wore a t-shirt that said “keeper of the gender” to the party. She told TODAY that she “did it for the element of surprise” and was “personally proud of myself for pulling it off.” She said she never meant to take the moment away from her daughter.
People weren’t buying it
People online were angry. The video got over 27 million views, and comments called Wulff selfish and said she was acting like a narcissist. One person wrote, “She took the excitement away from you on purpose. Either set boundaries now or suffer through a lifetime of more moments she takes away from you.” Other people said this was just the start and warned that the grandmother would keep crossing the line.
D’Alessio later made another video that she called her “narcissist mom reveal.” She talked to her mother about what happened and asked if she had ever set boundaries with her. Wulff just said “No.” When asked about all the hate online, the grandmother still didn’t feel bad about it. Like a mother who saw something scary bothering her daughter at night, some family videos leave people feeling really uncomfortable. Even some of Wulff’s own kids took D’Alessio’s side, with her brothers and sisters calling their mom a narcissist for making everything about herself.
The whole thing got so big that another influencer named Madison Humphrey made a joke version of the video that got 31.3 million views. D’Alessio told reporters that her mom acting this way was pretty normal. She said her mother “loves to be in the spotlight.” She said she wasn’t really upset because “it’s expected” from her mom.
But she did say she would never let her mother be the “gender keeper” again. Family drama keeps getting huge attention on social media, kind of like the creepy dashboard video that showed people no one else could see.
Even though millions of people told her to cut her mom off, D’Alessio said that would be “crazy work.” The two of them still talk several times every day. D’Alessio’s daughter Melody is now 2 years old, and she’s having another baby soon. It’s a boy this time. But there won’t be any gender reveal party.
