Moira Anderson Foundation director nominated for national award

THE director of the Moira Anderson Foundation has been nominated for a prestigious national accolade.

Gillian Urquhart has made it to the final of the social impact of the year category of this year’s Business Women Scotland Business Awards.

Gillian, who was the first member of staff employed by the Airdrie charity when it opened its doors 20 years ago, was told about her impressive achievement by the organisation’s founder Sandra Brown.

Gillian said: “It is a real honour and a wonderful surprise; I am over the moon.

“If I was to win the award it would be great for the charity, in terms of raising awareness, highlighting what we do and encouraging more people to call us, and I would be thrilled too.

“The Foundation is celebrating its 20th anniversary and this kind of recognition shows how far it has come. I have went through a lot of personal growth in the past two decades as well.”

The awards ceremony will take place on November 6, in a virtual format due to Covid-19 – and tickets are on sale now.

Gillian said: “I am used to doing things virtually as the Foundation has been dealing with a lot of its clients that way and we found out about our special commendation in the Scottish Council for Voluntary Organisations awards via an online ceremony.

“The majority of clients have been happy to get support by phone or video chat and we have been using NHS Lanarkshire’s Near Me video call service which is secure and confidential.”

Hosted by television presenter Rachel McTavish, ticket holders can tune in to the Business Women Scotland Business Awards from their office or living room.

Main speaker Lara Morgan, an entrepreneur who founded her first business, Pacific Direct, at the age of 23, said: “It is heart-warming to see so many talented women, across the board, succeeding in business – especially in these challenging times.

“I congratulate each and every one of the finalists on their hard-earned, well deserved success.”

Everyone who buys a ticket for the virtual awards ceremony will receive a gift bag containing a mini bottle of fizz and goodies from top Scottish brands and an event programme in advance.
