Mohamed Salah to avoid retrospective punishment after Porto claim Liverpool forward deserved red card

Liverpool striker Mohamed Salah will not face any retrospective punishment from UEFA despite the furore over his challenge on Porto's Danilo.

Salah caught the midfielder above his ankle with his studs as he attempted to reach the ball during the closing moments of the Reds' 2-0 win in Tuesday's Champions League quarter-final first leg at Anfield.

Spanish referee Antonio Mateu Lahoz waved play on and, with VAR in operation, the lack of action was not deemed a clear and obvious error from the official.

The real Naby Keita has arrived but Liverpool have bigger fish to fry after untraditional Anfield European night

Porto were nevertheless unhappy and goalkeeper Iker Casillas later made a point of posting on social media a close-up screen grab of the attempted tackle.

And defender Felipe said: "The tackle on Danilo was very dangerous, and the referee did not see it because if he had gone to the video, Salah would have been sent off."

However, Salah will not face an retrospective action under the rules of Article 9 in UEFA’s disciplinary regulations.

They state: "Decisions taken by the referee on the field of play are final and may not be reviewed by the UEFA disciplinary bodies.

"In cases of serious misconduct, disciplinary action may be taken even if the referee and his assistants did not see the event in question and were therefore unable to take any action."

Salah's incident is not regarded as serious misconduct, which means he will be available - if fit - for the return game in Portugal next Wednesday.
