Mohamed Salah's secret role on and off the pitch in Naby Keita's first Liverpool season

Midfield maestro Naby Keita made an instant impact at Liverpool last season.

The former RB Leipzig midfielder made his long-awaited move to Anfield last summer and established himself as an influential member of Jurgen Klopp's squad.

Keita quickly adapted to life on Merseyside - but the 24-year-old says he owes Mohamed Salah special thanks.

The pair are both in Salah's homeland of Egpyt for the African Cup of Nations, with Keita returning from the injury which caused him to miss the Champions League final as Guinea drew with Madagascar last weekend.

He has now opened up on the role goalscorer Salah played behind the scenes by taking him under his wing like a "little brother" in the dressing room.

Asked about Salah's influence, Keita told CAF : "Very well, he always gives me some advice on the pitch in Liverpool .

"He's a nice guy who works hard. When he works at the gym, he always asks me to join him.

"He looks after me like I'm his little brother."

Keita scored twice and registered one assist in 25 Premier League appearances, playing a key part in Jurgen Klopp's three-man midfield in the second half of the campaign.

He suffered a groin injury in May in their Champions League semi-final clash with Barcelona which caused him to miss the remainder of the campaign, including their memorable final win over Tottenham .

But he has won his race to be fit for the African Cup of Nations, with Guinea now set to take on Nigeria on Wednesday before their final group game against Burundi on Sunday.
