Mohamed Salah's Egypt absence explained as Liverpool star holidays ahead of AFCON 2019

Mohamed Salah's Champions League exertions with Liverpool have afforded him extra holiday time ahead of Egypt's Africa Cup of Nations campaign.

Salah scored the penalty spot for the Reds early on as they beat Tottenham 2-0 at the Wanda Metropolitano on June 1 to secure the club's sixth European Cup and the first trophy of Jurgen Klopp's reign at Anfield.

After starring for the Reds with a 27-goal campaign last term, the Champions League winner was given additional time off, despite Egypt already beginning preparations for AFCON 2019 .

The hosts get the competition underway later when they entertain Zimbabwe on Friday June 21, with Salah set to be part of the ranks for Javier Aguirre's Pharaohs.

While his international colleagues are part of a training camp ahead of pre-tournament friendlies with Tanzania and Guinea, Salah is enjoying the fruits of labour and is currently on vacation.

Salah's holiday will extend post-AFCON, with Jurgen Klopp keen to ensure one of his star men is afforded ample time to rest and recuperate after a season that effectively spanned 11 months following last year's World Cup.

As revealed on Tuesday, the ECHO understands Klopp will place his Liverpool players on specially-tailored training programmes when they return to Melwood next month.

That will include Salah , with Anfield officials wary of over-exerting their team after a gruelling 53-game campaign ended with glory in Madrid earlier this month.

Egypt director, Ihab Leheta, has detailed why Salah has been given more time off than most of his international colleagues ahead of his nation hosting AFCON.

"The national team has eight players who play abroad, six of them finished their season in mid-May, so they managed to take enough rest before arriving at the camp,” Lehita told TimeSports.

"On the other hand, (Arsenal's) Mohamed Elneny and Mohamed Salah have finished their seasons later, as they had Europa League and UEFA Champions League finals to play, therefore, they had to take some rest.

"Elneny has just arrived to the training camp and he has been undergoing additional exercises to raise his fitness level and Salah has agreed with the technical staff for an additional rest before featuring in the camp in the next few hours."

Salah has scored an incredible 71 goals in just 104 games for Liverpool since moving from Roma for £36.9million two years ago.
