Mohamed Salah provides training update as Liverpool star ready to return

Mohamed Salah has returned to Liverpool training after he was sidelined for club and country with coronavirus.

Salah, 28, returned a positive Covid-19 test during the first week of the international break.

The forward missed both of Egypt's games and drew criticism for his decision to attend his brother's wedding without wearing a mask prior to his positive test.

Salah, who is Liverpool's top scorer this season with 10 goals, also missed the Reds' clash with Leicester on Sunday night - though his side coped in his absence on their way to a dominant 3-0 win.

After the match, manager Jurgen Klopp confirmed Salah had tested negative for coronavirus after returning to Merseyside on a private jet.

And the former Roma star confirmed his return to training by posting a picture on Instagram of him grinning from ear to ear at the Reds' new base - the £50million state-of-the-art AXA Training Centre in Kirkby.

Liverpool departed from their old Melwood training ground last week to move into the new complex, which Klopp described as "pretty much perfect".

Salah has returned to training in time for Liverpool's home tie with Atalanta in the Champions League on Wednesday night.

But the Reds will almost certainly be without Naby Keita for the clash with the Serie A side after the midfielder suffered a hamstring injury midway through the match with Leicester.

“It was the perfect night until Naby left the pitch," Klopp said.

“He felt his hamstring and was not able to play on otherwise he would have stayed on the pitch.”

Keita's injury leaves Liverpool light in midfield - with Jordan Henderson and Thiago Alcantara also doubts - while the Reds are threadbare in defence after injuries to Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Trent Alexander-Arnold.
