Mohamed Salah left "very disappointed" with Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool captaincy decision

Mohamed Salah concedes he was "very disappointed" not to be given the armband in Liverpool's recent Champions League game at FC Midtjylland.

The Reds fielded a much changed side in their dead rubber game against the Danish side earlier this month.

Jordan Henderson was left out meaning Salah was one of the most senior players starting the game.

But Jurgen Klopp opted to make Trent Alexander-Arnold captain rather than the Egyptian.

Salah opened the scoring that night but admits his coach's decision was a tough one to take.

He told AS : "Honestly, I was very disappointed. I was hoping to be the captain, but it's a coach's decision. I accept it."

Salah has been prolific since moving to Anfield in 2017 scoring 108 times in 172 outings.

His goals have helped fire Liverpool to domestic and European glory, but they have also attracted plenty of attention.

The 28-year-old cost the Reds £45m but they could double that if they chose to cash in.

Real Madrid and Barcelona have both been linked with the forward who has refused to rule out a Liverpool exit in the future.

"That's a tough question, but right now I can say that everything is in the hands of the club," he said when asked about how long he sees himself at Anfield.

"Of course I want to break records here and, I repeat, all the club records, but everything is in the hands of the club.

"I think Madrid and Barcelona are two top clubs. Who knows what will happen in the future.

"But right now I am focused on winning the Premier League and the Champions League with Liverpool again."

Salah has earned individual recognition by winning the PFA Player of the Year award in 2018.

He is yet to win any continental awards but does feel as if he is among the world's leading players.

He added: "Yes absolutely (I am one of the best). Yes.

"When I look back on my career I want to feel that I achieved something special, that I did something special. That's why I try to do my best in every game and every year for the club and also for myself."
