Mohamed Salah Included in Egypt’s Squad for World Cup

Liverpool’s prolific strike Mohamed Salah will spearhead Egypt’s national team at the World Cup as the tournament will get underway in Russia next week.

Salah was included in the 23-man squad despite still recovering from a shoulder injury that forced him out of the Champions League final on May 26.

Salah, who hit a stunning 44 goals for Liverpool last season in all competitions, has undergone treatment in Valencia, Spain, in the hope of playing a role in Egypt's first appearance in the World Cup since 1990.

On Wednesday, the federation had said Salah would be out for "not more" than three weeks, meaning he could miss Egypt's opening World Cup Group A fixture against Uruguay on June 15.

Egypt then face Russia on June 19 and Saudi Arabia on June 25.

Egypt coach Hector Cuper, meanwhile, avoided discussing his future at the head of the team, suggesting that a poll be held for the fans to settle the issue after the World Cup.

The Argentine has come under criticism for his defensive style. He said that he understands the fans’ demands for adopting an offensive approach, adding however that he will commit to his style for the World Cup.

“We are trying to choose a realistic approach that suits the team,” he said from Egypt’s training camp in Italy.
