Mohamed Salah becoming the new Sergio Aguero as Liverpool cut out the middle man to save millions

Your Liverpool morning digest for Thursday, June 3.

Mohamed Salah becoming the new Sergio Aguero

By most normal standards, it has been a remarkable season for Mohamed Salah at Liverpool.

His tally of 31 goals in all competitions made him only the fourth Reds player to smash through the 30-goal barrier in a single campaign on multiple occasions since the club were promoted back to the top flight almost 60 years ago.

Salah, who first achieved the feat in his debut campaign in 2017/18, follows Roger Hunt (three times), Ian Rush (four times) and Robbie Fowler (three times).

With 22 goals in the top flight, the Egyptian was only one behind Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane in claiming a third Premier League Golden Boot award.

And all this while playing for a Liverpool side who for several months struggled to function as an attacking unit and scored one goal in seven home games at the start of the year.

Yet when it has come to the end-of-season individual honours, Salah has been completely overlooked for the third year running in the annual PFA awards.

Liverpool cut out the middle man to save millions

For a club like Liverpool. the transfer market can be a bit like spinning plates.

On the go is the desire to bolster the squad for the here and now with fresh faces or plug gaps left by departed players. Simultaneous is the realisation some personnel need to be moved on at the best price.

And all the while the search continues for young hopefuls that may one day blossom into first-team contenders.

There comes a point, though, where those fledgling talents are given the opportunity to prove correct the Reds' long-term vision and save the club millions in the process.

Liverpool will hope Harvey Elliott is approaching such a juncture.
