MOHALI: The municipal corporation (MC) house meeting on Monday was a stormy affair, ending in just 15 minutes as the mayor and office-bearers walked out of after unanimously approving the agenda following the opposition slamming management of garbage.
Manjit Singh Sethi, Sukhdev Singh Patwari and other opposition councillors protested against poor sanitation in the city. They said the sanitation department was not working to its full capacity in removing garbage from roadsides, parks and dumps. "Garbage dumps are visible all over roadsides, parks and other places. The sanitation department has failed to clean the city. The MC should give clean and hygienic atmosphere to residents."
On the other hand, mayor Amarjit Singh alias Jeeti Sidhu said the resolution of mechanised sweeping has been passed and with the issuance of work order, the issue would be resolved. Outsourcing of janitors was being done as an alternative arrangement, he said, while asking all councillors to cooperate with the civic body.
Municipal commissioner Kamal Garg said this problem has arisen due to untimely end of contract of mechanical sweeping. Councillors said janitors had been shifted from internal roads to main roads. However, Garg said as cleaning of main roads was important, sanitation workers were shifted there.
A resolution regarding the takeover of the newly-constructed roads by the Greater Area Mohali Development Authority (Gmada) within the limits of the MC was also passed. The mayor said sectors 48, 65, 68 and 71 have already been handed over to the MC but due to non-completion of road works, the MC was yet to get the stretches. Another important resolution passed was for challaning residential, commercial or buildings under construction found responsible for breeding of mosquitoes.
