A team of Moffat ladies will represent Scotland at the Petanque world championships in Spain later this month.
The Moffat Ewes will head to Santa Susanna near Barcelona a week on Thursday for the women’s triples competition which begins on November 12.
Team member Sue Macauley said she is thrilled to have the opportunity, alongside team-mates Elaine Crombie, Sarah Crombie and Zena Forbes, to represent the country at an event which was originally due to be held in Thailand earlier in the year but postponed due to the pandemic.
Petanque is a form of French boules but involves overhand throws with the objective being closer to the target after all players have thrown.
“Having the usual qualifying process has been disrupted for obvious reasons this year so we put ourselves forward and were chosen to be the Scotland team, which is a huge thrill for us,” said Macauley.
The squad are coached by her husband John Jardine and Elaine’s husband James Crombie.
“There will be 34 countries competing and the draw is made on 11 November,” added Ms Macauley. “Knowing our luck we will probably be drawn against France, who as inventors of the sport are the best in the world, but it would be great to have the opportunity to go up against them and test ourselves against the best.”
