'Modest' Queen only uses six of Buckingham Palace’s 775 rooms

The Queen only uses six of Buckingham Palace’s 775 rooms, according to sources who said she is "very modest".

Angela Kelly, the Queen's dressmaker said Her Majesty doesn’t spread out over the royal residence and prefers to occupy just a small number of rooms for her day-to-day living.

These rooms are said to be her bedroom, her private sitting room, her dressing room and bathroom, the Audience Room, which is where she meets with the Prime Minister and other dignitaries, and the Empire Room, which is a waiting room.

Angela writes in her new book, The Other Side of the Coin: The Queen, the Dresser and the Wardrobe: "These rooms aren’t vast and there is space for very little furniture; just the odd wardrobe or chest of drawers.”

"The only gentlemen that I have ever known to enter these rooms are The Duke of Edinburgh and other members of the royal family; because the Queen’s privacy is the absolute priority among her personal staff."

Buckingham Palace serves as the Queen's main residence, although she does typically stay at Balmoral from July to September.

During these months, the spectacular state rooms are open to the public.

Adam Helliker, author of a forthcoming book on the Royal Family, the Queen also recycles old bedsheets to be used at Balmoral Castle in Scotland during her visits there, reports the Sun.

Adam told Fabulous Digital: "In a materialistic world, how heartening to learn that the Queen continues to espouse frugalness in her royal households.

"Her Majesty is continuing to get good use from the bedspreads she rescued from the former Royal Yacht Britannia when the ship was decommissioned in 1997."

The Palace Buckingham has 775 rooms, including 19 State rooms, 52 Royal and guest bedrooms, 188 staff bedrooms, 92 offices and 78 bathrooms.

The building itself is 108 metres long across the front, 120 metres deep, including the central quadrangle, and 24 metres high.

More than 50,000 people visit the Palace each year as guests to State banquets, lunches, dinners, receptions and Garden Parties.

Queen Victoria was the first sovereign to take up residence in July 1837 and in June 1838 she was the first British sovereign to leave from Buckingham Palace for a Coronation.

The palace is currently undergoing a 10-year refurb set to cost £369 million of taxpayers' cash.

The work, which includes replacing electrical wiring, water pipes and the heating system, began in April 2017.

Work is being funded by taxpayers through a temporary uplift in the Sovereign Grant, the lump sum given to the royal household by the treasury every year.

It was previousl set at 15% of the profits from the Crown Estate but for 10 years from April 2017 will be set at 25%, giving the Royal Household extra money to carry out the renovations.

Master of The Queen's household Tony Johnstone-Burt said: "Buckingham Palace is one of the most iconic buildings in the world, and this programme is designed to extend its working life by a further fifty years."
