There are many explanations about what pergolas are, what they are made of, and why they are needed. But for the most part, these descriptions focus on the pergola in its old sense. Usually, we mean an arched structure through which plants climb. Or, at best, we are talking about a gazebo with a movable roof.
But in fact, modern variations of pergolas are completely different. Such a simple (at first glance) design can now be “stuffed” with technology. How exactly are they used, and for what purpose? What unusual thing can you come up with for a small arch or gazebo? Now, let's try to figure it out.
Three important questions about modern metal pergolas
- What is it used for?
It is sometimes said that a louvered pergola kit is chosen as a quick addition to a house or as a unifying element between different buildings or locations. However, modern technological pergolas have gone much further. Now, they do not just complement and decorate but are independent structures with many functions. In particularly advanced cases, a pergola can even become a temporary garage for a car, for example.
- What is unique about the design?
We will talk about various variations of the use of technology below. And now, perhaps, it’s only worth mentioning that modern pergolas have not only roofs that open and close but also walls. A pavilion that saves you from the sun can easily turn into a structure with one, two, three, or four walls. Moreover, each of these walls moves autonomously from each other.
- What is it made from?
Given its increased functionality, this type of pergola kit is most often made of aluminum. This ensures the strength and reliability of the entire structure. Of course, other materials are also used, such as plastic and wood, but aluminum pergolas are the most common option.
Unique characteristics of modern metal pergolas
- Walls. We must admit that pergola manufacturers' imaginations have run wild lately. Once upon a time, it all started with the automation of the roof: it began to be made of lamellas that unfold or fold using automatic control. The fabric canopy can also be removed using remote control.
- They have been supplemented by systems similar to roller blinds that open and close the walls. That is, along the perimeter between the two supports at the top, roller blinds can be lowered down. And then, on the right side, you have a dense partition. This way, you can easily protect yourself from wind blowing in a certain direction. Roller blinds, lowered on all sides, create a completely enclosed room.
- Roof. The roof has not been left unattended. The modern slats used here can withstand enormous weight, so they can easily withstand heavy rain and snowfall.
- Water flow. As we have already said, such technologically advanced aluminum pergolas can withstand heavy rainfall, but the moisture needs to drain somewhere. In this case, invisible drainage is provided: water flows through gutters on the roof, then gets inside the supports and goes down where there is drainage. As a result, no puddles or swamps around the gazebo.
- Backlight. The options can vary from the soft, muted light of night lights to the bright beams of a spotlight or even multi-colored night lighting, as in nightclubs. Usually, in these matters, the manufacturer focuses on the customer's tastes and preferences.
