Modern day Romeo and Juliet who met on balconies during lockdown are getting married

A couple dubbed 'Italy's modern-day Romeo and Juliet are getting married after falling in love from their balconies during lockdown.

Paola Agnelli, 40, and Michele D’Alpaos, 38, have lived opposite each other for most of their lives.

But they only spotted each other in March when a community balcony concert was arranged to cheer people up as the country was hit with tight restrictions due to the coronavirus crisis.

The couple, from Verona, say it was love at first sight.

After the concert, Michele managed to find Paola on Instagram and they began a text chain that would last until 3am every night.

Paola said they realised they shared the same values and that those values would form a solid base for a relationship.

The couple couldn't meet in person because of coronavirus restrictions so they had to make do with late night phone calls, the Metro reports.

But after patiently waiting they finally met in a park in May.

The story went viral after Michele wrote Paola's name on a sheet and hung it from his balcony (xxxxxx/Instagram)

And after a whirlwind romance, the lovebirds are planning a wedding.

Michele told The Times: "We are absolutely getting married and all we have to do is set the date.

"We are considering a ceremony on the large roof terrace of my building, which would make sense since we met on our balconies."
