Moderate showers lash Lucknow, rainy spell to continue today

LUCKNOW: Even as moderate rains continue to lash the city for the second consecutive day on Tuesday, the state Met department said that similar conditions will continue on Wednesday with one or two heavy spells.

The rainfall activity, however, will start declining from Thursday. Intermittent rains all day kept the weather pleasant, but led to waterlogging in many parts of the city, including Gomtinagar, Indiranagar, Alambagh, LDA Colony, Jankipuram, Aliganj, Hazratganj and Aminabad.

Patients and their attendants coming to SPM Civil Hospital in Hazratganj had a tough time as the entire area was submerged in ankle to knee-deep water.

State met director JP Gupta said that many parts of the state, including Lucknow, are expected to get rains in the next two days. “Heavy rainfall accompanied with thunderstorms and lightning is very likely in Sitapur, Hardoi, Kanpur, Unnao, Shahjahanpur and adjoining areas on Wednesday,” he said. “The rain intensity and frequency is expected to decline in Lucknow after Wednesday, but there are possibilities of heavy rainfall in Shahjahanpur, Hamirpur, Banda, Hardoi and Unnao on Thursday as well,” he added.

The monsoon trough line—a series of cyclonic circulation—passing from over the north UP along with heavy moisture feed from the Bay of Bengal is responsible for the rainfall being witnessed at present. These rains have come as a boon for farmers as many parts of the state were reeling under drought like conditions because of deficient rainfall in the past few weeks of the monsoon season that lasts from June till September in UP.
