A 29-year-old Vietnamese model, Ngoc Trinh caused quite a stir with her revealing look at the premiere of The Hidden Life on May 19 at the Cannes Film Festival.
Her sheer cut-out dress with a thigh-high slit exposed her nipples and bottom, making headlines for its audacity.
Revealing looks on the red carpet are nothing new – veteran performers such as Madonna and younger entertainers such as Emily Ratajkowski often wear barely there outfits at high-profile events such as the Met Gala – but Trinh’s dress didn’t go down well with the Vietnamese government.
According to multiple reports, Nguyen Ngoc Thien, Vietnam’s Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism, began an investigation that could lead to a heavy fine against Trinh for breaching the country’s strict decency laws.

“Her outfit was improper, offensive and has caused public outrage,” he said.
Looking at some of Trinh’s Instagram posts, it seems that this is not the first time that she has worn skimpy looks at public events but the Vietnamese government must have felt that this time she went a step too far, given the global spotlight of the Cannes Film Festival.
Regardless of the outcome of the case, Trinh, who has 2.3 million Instagram followers, will clearly benefit from her new-found international fame.
