Modball Rally UK: Incredible fleet of supercars worth millions descend on Cardiff

Over 25 cars announced their arrival with the boom of highly tuned engines as they wound their way through the streets of Cardiff for the finish of the second leg of Modball Rally UK this weekend.

They cars arrived at the city's Marriott Hotel on Saturday evening after travelling from the lake district as part of the race across Britain.

On Sunday morning the cars were lined up at Customs House, Penarth Marina to give members of the public a closer look.

Modball Rally is a prestigious motoring tour that takes place around Europe, the USA and Australia and attracts hundreds of high-spec cars each year.

It’s pretty expensive to enter, but participants get treated to parties and black-tie dinners at the stopovers.

The drivers set off from Edinburgh on Saturday, stopping at the Lakeside Hotel and Spa, Lake Windermere, for refreshments on the way to the finish line at the Marriott Hotel in Cardiff city centre, arriving at about 8pm.

The most expensive car on the Cardiff leg is a Lamborghini Aventador SVJ.

Only 900 of the model were built, each with a price tag of nearly £420,000.

Leg three begins in Cardiff on Friday September 6, so if you missed the Ferraris and Lamborghinis this time you’ll get another chance to see them in action.

What is the Modball Rally?

It’s an annual driving tour which takes a different route each year. It was founded in 2007 by British entrepreneur, Jon Joseph Bourgerie.

Up to 200 cars take part each year and although many are supercars or sports cars, any type of vehicle can be entered - there have even been fire engines and limousines taking part in the past.

Last year, the drivers started in London and ended up in Vienna, with stopovers in Paris, Lyon, Monaco and Venice.

Who can enter Modball?

Any car can be entered as long as it has at least two ‘MOD’ifications to the mechanics or cosmetics of the vehicle.

It costs £1,500 to enter, ‘co-pilots’ can be any age but only two people can be in each car.

Where does this year's rally go?

Leg 1 – London to Edinburgh – Friday May 3 – Sunday May 5

Leg 2 – Edinburgh to Cardiff – Friday July 12 – Sunday July 14

Leg 3 – Cardiff to London – Friday September 6 – Sunday September 8

Next year the route starts in London and ends up at the Monaco Grand Prix via Luxembourg, Zurich, Lake Como, Modena and Turin.
