Mobius Final Fantasy: This combat game is a unique time-killer

Japanese game company Square Enix has come up with another mobile game in the Final Fantasy series. Called Mobius Final Fantasy, the new game is different from other games in the series such as the Final Fantasy VII on account of its unique gameplay, small file size and a free-to-play model.

Designed for one-handed gaming

Mobius Final Fantasy is all about a bunch of heroes taking on mythical characters from Japanese folklore involving sword-based combats between one or multiple opponents. The game’s storyline has been written by renowned Japanese video game writer Kazushige Nojima, who has worked with Square Enix for the scripts of two of the best-selling games in the series, Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy X.

The graphics and characters look as well detailed as the characters in the console versions of the series. The only dampener is that the game doesn’t allow users to move around at will. Square Enix has removed the navigation part so the user can play the game single-handedly without involving the other hand. The lack of option to switch to landscape mode does feel odd at times.

The good news is that you can change the camera angle and have a 360-degree view or a top down view of the surroundings.

Limited options but fun to play

This unique game style has helped the developer keep the game’s size in check. Unlike previous Final Fantasy games, which require more than 1.5 GB of storage space, the new game is quite compact and has a file size of 490MB.

In terms of gameplay it looks like a duel-based game on the lines of Mortal Combat, where your job is to strike at the enemy by tapping on the screen until the enemy’s green bar drains out completely. The game gives access to special powers which can help speed up things. They are limited and can be accessed anytime by tapping on their respective on-screen icons. Despite its limitations, Mobius Final Fantasy is a good time killer and fun to play. However, it works online which means you need a stable Wi-Fi network to play it without interruption.

Is it worth downloading?

Mobius Final Fantasy is not as flexible as the console or other smartphone versions of the game, but is surely fun to play. For a die-hard Final Fantasy fan, it doesn’t have much to offer, but for someone looking for a good combat-based game on smartphone, this is a good time killer.
