Mobile-use curb for all on-duty Kolkata cops

KOLKATA: Barely two weeks after junior cops on duty at Nabanna and chief minister Mamata Banerjee’s Kalighat residence were barred from using mobile phones following a security breach, Kolkata Police commissioner Vineet Goyal passed an order asking all officers on duty — especially those on road, picket or sentry duty — to limit the use of phones.

“It is hereby ordered that all police personnel of Kolkata Police, while performing government duties, particularly law & order duties, picket/ sentry duties, and mobile duties (HRFS/QRT), shall not use mobile phone for activities other than making and attending emergency calls and official purposes. Strict disciplinary action will be taken against erring personnel for acting in violation of this order,” the order stated.

Cops stated that this was the first time senior officers were brought under this order. “This was a necessary step to discipline a section of the force that uses mobile phones all through the day, mostly to stay connected on social media,” said a joint commissioner. Sources stated that sudden checks will be carried out by senior officers to enforce the order.
