Mobile phone emergency alerts to be tested in UK for iPhone and Android users

Mobile phone owners could be sent sent a loud emergency alerts as part of a government test.

The UK government will send a test alert to some iPhone and Android devices between 1pm and 2pm on Tuesday June 29.

If you have an iPhone or Android device you may get an alert. Your device may make a loud siren-like sound.

The government says you do not need to take any action if this happens.

The alert will say: "The UK government is testing Emergency Alerts in Reading, Berkshire.

"Emergency alerts tell you what to do if there’s a life-threatening event nearby.

"To find out more, call 0808 1697692 or search for gov.uk/alerts"

Emergency Alerts is a new service from the UK government. It’s expected to launch in summer 2021.

They will warn you if there’s a danger to life nearby.

In an emergency, your phone or tablet will receive an alert with advice about how to stay safe.

The government and mobile phone networks are testing emergency alerts.

You may get an alert if you live in, or travel through, a test area.
