As news consumption moves from print to pixels, journalists have to learn new skills and approaches to their craft. This highly practical course, led by Guardian production editor Bill Shepherd, will teach you how to record video and audio to create high-quality content.
During the course, you’ll get involved in exercises where you record and edit footage using apps on your iPhone or iPad. You’ll also learn some of the theory behind filmmaking and some key cinematography tips to help your video news stories stand out from the crowd.
Course content
- Recording audio and video interviews, both with and without an external microphone
- Using a reporter’s microphone and monitoring using the Filmic Pro app
- Different types of shots – from point-of-view shots, to over-the-shoulder shots and cutaway shots
- How to create a formal, close-up shot without using an external microphone
- How to shoot informal ‘on-the-move’ pieces to-camera using an external microphone
- Introduction to the Hindenburg Field recorder app
- How to use well-established cinematography techniques to bring your content to life
- Editing your content using iPhone/iPad apps
- Adding titles, audio and still pictures in the iMovie app
- Practical exercises: the course includes regular activities where attendees interview each other to camera
- Regular Q&A, groupwork and discussion

Tutor profile
Bill Shepherd is a production editor at the Guardian and Observer newspapers in the editorial systems development department. He has taught many Guardian and Observer journalists digital skills, and enjoys filming interviews, documentaries and live events. Bill is a member of the Guild of Television Cameramen and teaches for the National Union of Journalists (NUJ).
