Mobile internet services remain snapped in Jammu & Kashmir’s Bhaderwah, Kishtwar amid tension

SRINAGAR: The mobile internet services continued to remain suspended in Jammu and Kashmir’s Bhaderwah and Kishtwar on Friday after curfew was imposed there late Thursday evening as authorities said attempts were made to aggravate communal tensions over some social media posts.

Additional district magistrate Dil Mir announced imposition of CrPC Section 144 in the town and Army, paramilitary and police personnel were deployed in force. According to media reports, the Army was to conduct a flag march in Bhaderwah town after some people tried to create communal tension. Protests were held by the Muslim community after some controversial posts went viral on social media.

The Muslim community had called for a shutdown in Bhaderwah town and had taken out the march to demand the arrest of suspended BJP national spokesperson Nupur Sharma for objectionable comments against Prophet Muhammad.

When the procession culminated at Jamia Masjid in Bhaderwah, two miscreants uttered some objectionable remarks against the community taking out the procession. The police later registered an open FIR. In the evening, a person posted some objectionable remarks on social media against Islam and this went viral. Members of the aggrieved community then tried to attack the house of the person who had posted on social media but police stopped the mob by blocking the road with barbed wire.

Police registered a criminal case against the accused at Bhaderwah police station and warned people that anyone found taking the law into his or her hands would not be spared.

Police said they were watching the situation closely and would act against anyone found disturbing law and order.
