Mobile hairdresser stole from great-grandmother during home appointment

A mobile hairdresser has been found guilty of stealing twice from an elderly client while she was having a shampoo and set.

Sandra Barter, 57, of Park Close, Keynsham, was sentenced to 150 hours community service at Bristol Magistrates Court on Monday, October 14.

She was caught red-handed after the family of Joan Hunt, a great-grandmother, set up CCTV in her home after growing suspicious about money going missing.

Barter was found guilty of stealing an unknown quantity of money on December 14, 2018 and a further £20 on December 21, 2018.

Debra Watkins, one of the victim's three daughters, said: "It has made us so worried about people going to the house. Mum is worried and obsessed about money.

"She has come to mum's house for four years and cut her hair in the salon before that for years. Mum thought of her as a friend. She would have a shampoo and set in the back room and she [Barter] would go and very nicely make her a cup of coffee or tea. But she was taking money from Mum's purse."

The family first set up CCTV in September, 2018 but it took them three months before they saw Barter helping herself to Mrs Hunt's money.

Barter, who operates her mobile hairdressing business in south Bristol, pleaded not guilty to a charge of theft of cash of an unknown value.

Her community service must be carried out in the next 12 months. She must also pay £1,105 in compensation and court fees.
