Beloved Scottish supermarket cat inspires new children's book

A CAT which made headlines after being banned from a Scottish Co-Op has inspired a new children's book.

Mo, a tabby cat, became a "local legend" in Newtongrange, Midlothian after he was frequently spotted napping and observing customers in the shop.

However a complaint was filed to the company's head office, resulting in him being banned.

Locals rallied behind Mo, with a petition set up to "let Mo, the Co-Op cat, roam free" gathering over 3000 signatures.

He was injured shortly after the ban and following a full recovery, he was welcomed back to the Co-Op with "open arms and plenty of chin scratches".

Now, Midlothian musician Caryn – known by her stage name CJ – has launched a children's book titled Mo and the Mining Village, inspired by Mo and serving as a "gentle reminder of the strength of community spirit".

It features illustrations of the famous feline and rhyming verses inspired by his adventures and is aimed at children aged between seven and three.

The novel is accompanied by a companion Mo Activity Book, complete with colouring pages, puzzles, mazes and "kindness-themed" games.

One pound of each sale will be donated to Lothian Cat Rescue, a shelter which operates out of nearby town Bonnyrigg.

Mo has previously been hailed as a "mascot" of the Newtongrange community and the petition ended up raising money – all of which was also donated to Lothian Cat Rescue.

The shelter helps rehome abandoned cats and kittens, including ones whose families are no longer able to care for their pets. It also helps reunites lost pets with their owners.

Mo and the Mining Village does not have an official release date as of yet, but those wishing to pre-order both books can do so here
