Mo Salah: Man, 32, charged over 'racist' tweet about Liverpool footballer

A man has been charged in connection with an offensive tweet about Liverpool footballer Mo Salah.

Gary Hyland, 32, of Waterloo, is accused of a racially aggravated public order offence and obstructing a constable in the execution of their duty, Merseyside Police said.

He has been remanded in custody and is due to appear at Liverpool Magistrates' Court on Friday.

An investigation was launched after an offensive tweet about the Egyptian-born Liverpool FC striker was reportedly posted by an Everton FC fan.

It included a photoshopped image of the footballer.

The post was condemned by the club.

In a statement, it said: "Everton condemns in the strongest terms any kind of racism.

"We have shared the material with the appropriate authorities and are looking into the matter further to understand if the Twitter user in question is known to the club in any way."

A spokesman for Merseyside Police said: "Hate crime in any guise will not be tolerated and those who use the internet to target others, and who commit a criminal offence such as hate crime in doing so, need to understand that they are not beyond the law."
