MNRE to get energy efficient headquarters

New Delhi: The new and renewable energy ministry is set to have modern headquarters named after former Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee which will generate clean energy almost equal to its annual power consumption, the ministry said.

The Atal Akshay Urja Bhawan, to be built at the central government office complex area in the capital, will house a pavilion showcasing renewable energy systems and devices, the ministry said quoting Piyush Goyal, minister for power, coal, new and renewable energy and mines.

“Energy conservation and renewable energy are areas where India is soon going to be a global leader. This government is committed to strive for this mission and light up peoples’ lives in an environmental friendly and sustainable manner,” the statement said quoting Goyal.

The headquarters will be a symbol of the clean energy revolution in the country, said Upendra Tripathy, secretary in the ministry. India has set a target of having 175 gigawatt (GW) of renewable energy capacity by 2022, up from about 7 GW at present. A report from Bridge to India, a clean energy consultancy, released on Wednesday said that the country has added 513 MW of rooftop solar capacity over the past 12 months, growing at 113 % over the previous 12 months, taking the total installed capacity of such systems to 1 GW.
