MMR vaccine: Why parents shouldn't fear getting their child vaccinated

Vaccines in general can strike fear into parents, particularly first time mums and dads.

And of course with lots of burning questions we usually turn to our old friend the internet to find out more.

But with so much information out there on the MMR vaccine and vaccines in general, it can be hard to separate the facts from the myths, so that's why we've asked the experts.

On this week's episode of our parenting podcast Is this Normal? we're chatting to Jillian Johnston from Public Health Agency (PHA) who talks us through babies and kids vaccination programmes, pregnancy vaccines, HPV vaccine for boys and of course the MMR vaccine.

In Northern Ireland, we currently have a high uptake on vaccines in comparison to other parts of the UK which is positive.

With lots of worrying information on MMR vaccine online, Health Protection Consultant Jillian Johnston from PHA says parents shouldn't worry.

She explains: "It's normal for parents to want to do the best for their child and they want to know why their doing it and what the information is so they can make the right decision.

"The vaccines in our programme are only introduced after a very rigorous testing process, so we only introduce vaccines that we know are safe and that we know that they work.

"Parents worry and get stressed about it and that's very normal, I think they key thing for parents is to keep calm and to be reassured they're doing the best thing for their child and protecting them from these serious infections."
