MMA’s week out of the cage: Fighters react to Anthony Joshua’s upset loss, Memorial Day 2019

Social media has become a significant part of the sporting landscape. But few, if any, professional sports match the level of interaction and personal access provided by MMA.

In an individual competition in which nearly every athlete is chasing the same goal of financial success and championship glory, it’s important for fighters to provide insight into their lives in order to connect with fans and gain followings.

Although the life of a fighter often can be mundane and repetitive, there still are moments of interest that take place outside the cage, ring or training room. Here are some of the most interesting of those occurrences from the past week.

9 years clean and sober today. The picture on the left was my birthday November 13 2009, and that night was the beginning of the end. That night I returned to drinking and using drugs after a 10 day dry period to prove to everyone that I didn't have a problem. A short 6 months later (may 31 2010) I checked myself into the chemical dependency program at park ridge. (The Rehab at unity hospital) I got lucky, with some hard work, some tough love, and some really special people put in my path …it stuck. Today marks 9 years that I haven't had to pick up a drink or drug. The picture on the right….well, who would have guessed 9 years ago that today I'd be fighting in the biggest organization in the world, and be ranked in the top 10 on top of that?!?! Crazy life #ufc #sober

The Blue Corner is MMA Junkie’s blog space. We don’t take it overly serious, and neither should you. If you come complaining to us that something you read here is not hard-hitting news, expect to have the previous sentence repeated in ALL CAPS.
