WATCH: MLS will not punish Alejandro Bedoya for gun violence comments

Alejandro Bedoya, a midfielder and captain for MLS’ Philadelphia Union, will not be fined or punished by Major League Soccer for what’s become a viral moment from a match on Sunday.

He used his voice — quite literally — to speak out against gun violence while playing D.C. United in Washington D.C. He scored a goal in the first half and then, after a brief celebration with teammates, jogged over to an on-field microphone and shouted, “Congress, do something now! End gun violence.”

Bedoya has spoken up in the past, typically on Twitter, about gun violence in America. He tweeted about the issue before Sunday’s match in response to the two mass shootings over the weekend in El Paso, Texas and Dayton, Ohio:

Major League Soccer put out the following statement on Monday:

“The Major League Soccer family joins everyone in grieving for the loss of lives in Texas and Ohio, and we understand that our players and staff have strong and passionate views on this issue.”
