Canadian actor-comedian Sarah Warren writes, directs, produces and stars in this vexingly uneven comedy about an aspiring Canadian actor-comedian named Julie Robert who is struggling to get a gig or an agent or any kind of performance-related job in London. In desperation, she accepts an offer to do some spying for a plastic surgeon suspicious about what his daughter is up to with the money he gives her.
There are drunken hijinks involving Julia’s best friend Camila (Julie Sype) and satirical sideswipes against new age-y types, British men’s weird courting rituals, the vileness of talent agents and more, some of it witty and incisive. Unfortunately, too many of the gags Warren throws splat against the wall, leaving a puddle of self-indulgence, overacting and irritating film-making tics. It’s frustrating because, at times, Warren gets the Lena Dunham/Tina Fey/Amy Poehler-style comedy of embarrassment and overshare just right.
