The Trade Deadline is always one of the most exciting parts of the Major League Baseball season. And this year, it didn’t disappoint. Several players found new homes before the close of the trade window on July 31, and to commemorate the occasion, MLB The Show 25 is introducing its New Threads 2.0 promotion.
This is obviously a continuation of the first New Threads program that dropped towards the beginning of the Diamond Dynasty cycle, where several players who had joined new teams in the offseason were given high-rated cards, such as the 88-rated Aroldis Chapman or the incredibly overpowered 89-rated Anthony Santander. But what will New Threads 2.0 be bringing to the table?
MLB The Show 25 New Threads 2.0: All Players, Rewards, And Challenges
New Threads 2.0 Program
The New Threads 2.0 Program introduces several earnable Diamond-rated cards, each representing a player who was recently traded at the deadline. Because they’re part of a program, they can be earned for free by completing Moments and Missions. The cards (along with their ratings) included in the New Threads 2.0 program are listed below:
- Chris Paddack (97)
- Ke’Bryan Hayes (97)
- Griffin Jax (97)
- Josh Naylor (98)
- Merrill Kelly (98)
- Ryan McMahon (99)
- Cedric Mullins (99)
Honestly, this is a great group of players that can be earned for free. Griffin Jax has always been a useful righty to come out of the pen. Josh Naylor is likely more of a platoon bat, but he should have tons of pop. Ryan McMahon and Cedric Mullins always have great swings as well, and might find themselves in some lineups.
My only concern is that a lot of people have completed the Live Series collection by now and are probably stacked. Still, more content is never a bad thing.
Ryan Helsley Headlines The New Threads 2.0 Showdown
Closing pitcher Ryan Helsley was traded from the St. Louis Cardinals to the New York Mets at the deadline in an effort to aid the latter in their quest to win the NL East. Helsley might not have a pitch mix that wows people, but his outlier fastball always comes in hot.
To unlock the New Threads Helsley, players will have to complete the New Threads 2.0 Showdown. Honestly, not a bad deal for a flame-throwing righty reliever.
New Threads 2.0 Conquest Map
Along with the rest of the New Threads 2.0 content dropping this afternoon, there will also be a New Threads Conquest map that will reward players with New Threads 2.0 cards depending on which Stronghold you beat. There’s also a reward for beating all of the Strongholds.
- Beat the Chicago Cubs – Taylor Rogers
- Beat the New York Yankees – David Bednar
- Beat the Minnesota Twins – Taj Bradley
- Beat the Los Angeles Dodgers – Brock Stewart
- Beat the San Diego Padres – Freddy Fermín
- Capture all 5 Strongholds – Ramón Laureano
Again, I like this a lot. It’s an offline grind that rewards players with some good meta cards. Taylor Rogers, David Bednar, and Brock Stewart are all great relief pitchers. And, as of right now, I feel the bullpen is one of the areas where MLB The Show 25 really needs depth. So good inclusions here!
New Threads 2.0 Pack Content
OK, now that we’ve gotten all of the free content out of the way, who will San Diego Studio be locking behind packs? Here are the cards that will be available to attain in the New Threads 2.0 pack:
- Dustin May (97)
- Randal Grichuk (97)
- Charlie Morton (97)
- Andrew Chafin (97)
- Mike Soroka (97)
- Amed Rosario (97)
- Tyler Rogers (97)
- Camilo Doval (98)
- Ryan O’Hearn (98)
- Harrison Bader (98)
- Gregory Soto (98)
- Shane Bieber (99)
- Jhoan Duran (99)
- Eugenio Suárez (99)
- Leodalis De Vries (99)
To the surprise of absolutely nobody, the undisputed best content in the entire New Threads 2.0 promo is hidden behind the pack. Right off the bat, Jhoan Duran, Eugenio Suarez, and Camilo Doval stand out as being among the most sought-after cards of the bunch. Leodalis De Vries also had an excellent Spring Breakout card earlier this year, and I’m sure his 99 will play like a dream at the plate and at short. All of these cards will require some pack luck to get, unless you have a big surplus of Stubs that you can fork out on them.
New Threads 2.0 Collection
Upon attaining most (if not all) of the New Threads 2.0 cards, you can use them towards the New Threads collection update, which will be receiving the following three new 99-rated cards:
- Mason Miller
- Carlos Correa
- Willi Castro
Granted, these cards will likely be awesome. Mason Miller is a great hard-throwing reliever, Carlos Correa is a top bat, and Willi Castro is among the biggest demons in MLB The Show history. So, are they worthy of the time that will be required to complete the New Threads collection? Yeah, probably. However, that’s going to be tough to do.
While there are plenty of cards that you can grind for, the pack content in New Threads 2.0 will likely be extremely expensive. That not only goes for the cards being released in the 2.0 pack, but the first batch that came out this year. Already, New Threads cards like Christian Walker, Kenley Jansen, and Cody Bellinger have skyrocketed in price. So, unless you were able to get those cards months ago, you’re going to have to spend a lot of Stubs to get enough cards for the likes of Correa, Miller, and Castro.
I don’t want it to sound like I’m being overly negative — I do think this is a good content drop! However, it’d be disingenuous of me not to mention how tiring a lot of these collections have been to complete and how much of a grind this has all felt like.
