MLB stars play ball, but don’t know ball when it comes to Pokémon

Poké Balls, baseballs, same thing. Right? Not really.

Recently, Major League Baseball polled some of its top stars to ask them who their favorite Pokémon is as part of the franchise's 30th anniversary this year, and the majority of the answers were quite disappointing, to be honest.

I guess it's hard to fault the players for not being completely versed in Pokémon if they've been busy building their hitting and fielding skills, but still, way too many of these guys said Pikachu. At their ages (most of them are in their 20s), they should know a bit more "ball" when it comes to pocket monsters.

Here's the list of top mons from the ballplayers, with most of them pretty basic:

  • Charizard
    • Mike Trout (Los Angeles Angels)
    • Tarik Skubal (Detroit Tigers)
  • Blastoise
    • Pete Alonso (Baltimore Orioles)
  • Bulbasaur (not Salazar or Barbazar)
    • Ben Rice (New York Yankees)
  • Mewtwo
    • Masyn Winn (St. Louis Cardinals)
  • Snorlax
    • Hunter Brown (Houston Astros)
  • Zapdos
    • Jake Burger (Texas Rangers)
  • Dialga
    • Jordan Walker (St. Louis Cardinals)
  • Dragonite
    • Jacob Wilson (Athletics)
  • Torchic and Blaziken
    • Steven Kwan (Cleveland Guardians)
  • Pikachu
    • Michael Harris II (Atlanta Braves)
    • Shohei Ohtani (Los Angeles Dodgers)
    • Fernando Tatis Jr. (San Diego Padres)
    • Vladimir Guerrero Jr. (Toronto Blue Jays)
    • Chase DeLauter (Cleveland Guardians)
    • Oneil Cruz (Pittsburgh Pirates)
    • Julio Rodriguez (Seattle Mariners)
    • Geraldo Perdomo (Arizona Diamondbacks)
    • Byron Buxton (Minnesota Twins)
    • and several more

The majority of the players stuck to the original 151, which is fine. I gained some new respect for Jake Burger today, because we've got the same favorite. And a big shoutout to Colton Cowser of the Orioles for actually collecting cards and being four away from completing the Mega Evolution set. Everyone else, it's time to start doing some research, especially as a bunch of these guys now have young kids of their own.

Agree to disagree, Pokémon account.
