MLB’s biggest surprises of the year, including a home run record on pace to be broken

It’s still early in the MLB season, but hitters are homering at an unprecedented pace. The 349 games played through Tuesday saw big-leaguers club an astonishing 931 homers, putting the league on track to shatter the record set in 2017 for most total longballs in a season.

Two years ago, MLB hitters combined to hit 6105 homers, a record that eclipsed the previous high — set back in 2000 — by more than 400. This year, they’re on pace to hit nearly 6500 home runs.

That’s especially notable because players tend to hit more home runs during the summer months, hot, humid air helps balls travel further. The current mark of 931 home runs already eclipses the total of 863 hit across 369 games played in April in the record-shattering 2017 campaign.
